40 things I love about Oman #31 Shawarmas
This is Arabian fast food! This is the best ever! I can't even begin to describe how good this is, but I will give it a go. Chicken (on the left) and Mutton (lamb) are cooked on this rotisserie grill. The meat when cooked is shaved off with a sharp knife. The meat is them placed in a thin pitta bread with salad (tomatoes, pickles, cilantro) and topped with french fries-oh so good- and a tahini (sesame paste mixed with lemon juice and garlic) sauce for the lamb shawarma or garlic mayonnaise for the chicken. It is all rolled up burrito style.
This would be our late night snack craving or a late dinner on nights when we worked late.
You will find these little shawarma shops all over Muscat. Everyone has their favorite, but most young people will tell you that Istanboly Turkish Kebab is the best. If you ask they will put "hot sauce" on the shawarma-it's was like eating a buffalo wing minus the messiness of the bones!
The best part is you can drive up and give in your order and they will bring the food to your car. Once the owner got to know us he knew our order and would always have us served quickly. The parking lot would be a bit chaotic-not your typical drive through-but it was worth sitting in the car with the air conditioning going rather than waiting outside in line.
Forget Taco Bell! This is the place to go for a late night snack craving.
