Ramadan Ramblings..day 7

So we have hit the one week mark in Ramadan..3 weeks to go! It is the Holy Day here so most people have the day off to rest and pray.
Yes, we did rest and pray today..but also got to find a food outlet making and selling food during Ramadan while it was still daylight! I am sure this is not illegal but nevertheless we quickly ran in, gave our order and escaped. Felt a bit conspicuous leaving but never did Subway taste so good!
I heard that McDonalds will serve take-away too in certain stores but only after 4pm, so we were fortunate that Subway was open during our lunch time. The Kiddos haven't ever had a Subway (well the oldest has once I think) so for them it was a new treat.
And it's open 24 hours..another first for a shop in Oman. I think this is the only one. Of course there are no pork products at all, ever, so it's either beef pepperoni or turkey or chicken meat. Still good.

(from Wikipedia regarding "Halaal")

Halal foods are foods that are allowed under Islamic dietary guidelines. According to these guidelines gathered from the Qu'ran, Muslim followers cannot consume the following (also known as haraam or forbidden in Islam):
  • animals not slaughtered properly
  • animals that are slaughtered in the name of a god other than Allah (enunciating this blessing at the point the animal yields its life is the single most important aspect of halal meat)
  • carnivorous mammals
  • pork or pork by-products (ex. marshmallows, gelatin, jello)
  • animals that were dead prior to slaughtering
  • blood and blood by-products
  • birds of prey
  • alcohol

There is a lot more to be said on the Wiki site regarding this but this is the shortened version.
